Meet The Artist
Carol Wilks
I have been involved in some form of art for most of my adult life—a span of over 40 years, mostly in pastel. I retired and now have more time to devote to painting and am enjoying it immensely. My family has been my inspiration for portraiture over the years. I now do portraits on commission. I am a member of three art societies, exhibit in art shows throughout the region in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and have donated pieces to various charities. I have won awards for my pastel animals, the recent at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore, MD in a show entitled, “Fur and Feathers”. Some of my paintings are currently on permanent display here at the Mansion House Art Gallery in Hagerstown, MD. My customers range from animal (and people) lovers to art collectors.
I use a variety of media in my work in addition to pastels, I use charcoal, acrylics, oils, watercolors and inks. Although, portraiture remains my first passion, I also enjoy a variety of subject matter from landscapes to still life. Throughout the last 30 years I have continued to expand my education in the use of various media through formal education and individual instruction. I am an art instructor in acrylics and oils, and offer courses two days a week. In addition, I have offered workshops in the use of pastels.
The paintings I submitted to the Pastel Society of America are all based on my own photos and drawings, created in my art studio in my home. In 2016, I was given the opportunity to travel to Kalispell, Montana to the DDD Ranch that houses many species of animals including endangered species such as the Siberian Tiger named Hershey. They offer an atmosphere for professional photographers. I took over 20,000 photos in a period of 5 days, where we photographed in the morning and painted in the afternoon. My special portrait is that of my great grandson, 1 year old Noah, the love of my life.
